I think this is why Bataille talks so much about “non-knowledge”. The ego always presumes to know so that it can maintain the illusion of having control over everything. It handles its many fears and anxieties by asserting mastery of knowledge forcefully. But to sit back and accept that one does not to know and cannot know allows much more information to flow into one’s mind. I don’t have a problem with ego and rarely have had so (rather with a lack of egoism at times, when I was in the regimented mode and did not think how to serve myself because I had not yet developed a sufficient sense of a self). But sometimes I have had anxiety and fear, and I overcome these better by accepting that I cannot control reality through asserting my expertise in terms of some field of knowledge. It’s much more fruitful to be completely receptive and continue to learn.
