Happy to help

I am not rolling in money, graduate student that I am. All the same I was more than happy to pay for a Zimbabwean friend, whom I recently met, to go to attend an event that was important to him in another country. (This was less expensive than you’d think.) To me this is the kind of thing we all should be doing. It’s not about the morality of it (which is the only sense in which most westerners think helping has a value.) It was about my own pleasure in seeing that somebody else could do so much more than I would be able to do, with the small amount of money. This kind of vicarious pleasure reforms — whilst having nothing whatsoever to do with what we usually understand by ‘liberal reform’.

Here’s what he said: I really want to thank you so much for making this possible for me.Without you I would not have been able to go and it was an experience of a life tym.
